Nice jam. I think a mouse driven gui would be nice, but I really like the concept, its like the modding is built in to the gameplay. Maybe there's a way to make this more seamless, like perhaps only use the mouse for platform building and then only use keyboard/gamepad for movement.
You are not the first to request mouse driven UI for the platforms :P It would work for the keyboard controls, but not much for the controller I think since switching between controller and mouse seems tedious.
Having it seemless so you can run and build at the same time would make for a better game I think, but the theme for this jam was Life in 2 Dimensions and since my 2 dimensions are the running dimension and the building dimension, it would not have worked for this jam :)
